Start by Believing

We pledge to Start by Believing.

Held annually on the first Wednesday in April, the Start by Believing Campaign aims to transform the way we respond to sexual assault.

"When someone tells you they were sexually assaulted or abused, knowing how to respond is critical. A negative response can worsen the trauma and foster an environment where perpetrators face no consequences for their crimes.

Start by Believing stops this cycle by improving our personal and professional reactions.

It all starts with you. Make your personal commitment to Start by Believing." (Start by Believing)

The Start by Believing Campaign offers resources, toolkits, and more to help improve our approaches and better support those who have survived sexual assault. If you are interested in learning more, please visit their website at https://startbybelieving.org/

Special Display at HERS

The HERS Gift Shop is featuring a Special Display each month! April will feature “Baskets“.

Basketry, the art of weaving “Baskets”, has a history stretching back over 10,000 years. In early times baskets were primarily used for gathering, storing and transporting food, but also served a ceremonial and decorative purpose. Baskets are made from many different materials including wicker, bamboo, plastic, grasses, fax, wheat and wood. Weavers have designed

specialty baskets like knitting baskets, sewing baskets and many more. Baskets can be used to store towels in your bathroom, display your favorite plants and treasures and of course gather “Easter“ eggs and treats!

Drop in the Shop at 234 Bentinck Street and check out our feature, mix it up and change it up! The price is right!

Shop Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – 10:00 to 4:00 and Saturday – 11:00 to 3:00

If you see something you like, give us a call and we will hold it for you until you can drop-in!

Note: Upcoming Feature: May - Teapots

SANE Appreciation

We would like to take a moment to shine the spotlight on one of our many amazing Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), Paula Morrison, for our April SANE Nurse Appreciation!

Paula has been a Registered Nurse for 30 years and has worked in a variety of different settings throughout her career. Her most recent job, in addition to being a SANE, is a clinical nurse leader on a medical-surgical unit in Cape Breton.

Paula has dedicated the last 30 years of her career being a strong leader, compassionate care provider and always goes above and beyond for any person in her care or team she is working with. The dedication and commitment that Paula has brought to the SANE team is admirable.

“I love my role as a SANE. My greatest hope is that, in my role as a SANE, I am able to provide comfort and reassurance to victims of sexual assault on one of the worst days of their life and help them begin their healing journey. I am truly fortunate to be part of such a dedicated team of professionals who are invested in providing trauma-informed care to survivors of sexual violence” (Paula Morrison).

We are so fortunate to have Paula as part of the amazing EWC SANE team.
