SANE Nurse
Appreciation

January 1st, 2026

It's time to shine the spotlight on one of our amazing Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), Nancy Keagan!

Nancy began her nursing career in 2014 and has spent many years providing compassionate care in Medsurg, with her current practice in Hospice. Each role has shaped her as a nurse and strengthened her commitment to patient-centered, empathetic care.

She joined the SANE program in 2023, feeling a strong calling to support survivors during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. For Nancy, this work is meaningful, humbling, and deeply human. She is grateful for the opportunity to offer comfort, dignity, and skilled care to individuals who deserve to be heard, believed, and supported.

Through her work with SANE, Nancy has expanded her understanding of trauma-informed practice and deepened her belief in the power of quiet presence. What she values most is the ability to create a safe space — even if only briefly — where someone feels seen, respected, and cared for.

“Care, dignity, and presence matter — especially in moments of trauma.”

Thank you, Nancy, for your dedication, your advocacy, and for the meaningful care you provide every time you answer a call. Your work matters and so do you!

Important Message
Regarding SANE

January 1st, 2026

Nova Scotia Health recently shared information about the SANE program and its service scope, including details related to intimate partner violence (IPV). We want to reassure our community that there have been no changes to our program.

Our SANE team continues to respond to sexual assault cases just as we always have. While IPV response was not part of the services our program provided, our work and supports remain fully in place.

There have been a few posts suggesting the SANE program has been discontinued, and we’d like to clarify that this isn’t the case. Our services continue to be available, and our commitment to supporting survivors remains unchanged.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for your continued support!
